CBI filed against 10 persons for fraud in NREG scheme in Assam.

NREG schemeThe CBI has filed a charge sheet against 4 public servants and 6 private persons for alleged fraud in the Centrally-sponsored Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Assam.

In its chargesheet filed before a Special CBI judge in Guwahati, the agency has charged then Post Master of Algapur (Hailakandi, Assam) branch post office, a zila parishad member, a junior engineer and a gram panchayat secretary besides 6 private individuals of alleged siphoning of money under MGNREGS using fake job cards.

A CBI spokesperson said that the accused have been booked on charges of criminal conspiracy, forgery and under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 for illegally and dishonestly opening 185 post office saving bank accounts in the names of conjured job card holders under MGNREGS.

The official added that “The accused subsequently withdrew the credited amount released by the Government towards payment of wages from the respective SB accounts, and misappropriated the entire fund of Rs 16.93 lakh during the year 2009-11, without actually executing the works at sites.”
