Assamese filmmaker awarded with first Bhupen Hazarika National Award.

jahnu baruaMuch-admired Assamese filmmaker and nine-time National award winner Jahnu Barua was awarded with the Bhupen Hazarika National Award by Pune-based NGO Sarhad on Sunday.

The NGO, which has been working for 25 years to connect people from border areas to the mainstream, institute the annual award this year in the name of award-winning singer Bhupen Hazarika who passed away last year.

The award was presented by Ex-Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta at S M Joshi Hall.  Barua received Rs 51,000, a trophy and a citation.

Barua said that “Bhupen Hazarika is one of the most revered name in the North-east. It is a great honour to receive this award.”

A receiver of the Padma Shri award, Barua has wins nine national awards for his films. Also present were P A Inamdar, educationalist, Mohan Dharia, Vanarai president and industrialist Bharat Desalda, among others.
