Guwahati: The flood condition in Assam is improving with the flood water receding in many districts. Over half of Assam, 16 of 27 states, was covered and over 17 lakh people have been displaced. The 18 people have died in the floods.
Amidst growing criticism for his absence during one of the nastiest floods in recent years, Assam’s CM Tarun Gogoi cut short his 6-day study tour in Japan and rushed back to India today.
He left last Friday as part of the allocation of the Empowered Group of State Finance Ministers, while the flood water was rising and the rainfall was above average.
Lakhs of homes have been washed away, farmlands have inundated in water and crop has been destroyed, and foremost roads and bridges have been affected, harshly hindering transportation. Thus far, 2.5 lakh people have sought refuge in the relief camps set up because even the relief camps have flooded in water.
