2012 London Olympics Day 3: Gagan Narang won bronze in men’s 10m rifle.

Gagan NarangLondon: Air Rifle: Gagan Narang on Monday opened India’s account in the London Olympic 2012 by winning the bronze medal in the men’s 10m air rifle event at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

However, Abhinav Bindra, India’s shooting gold medallist in 2008 fails to make it in the qualifying event for the title.

Archery: In the women’s individual archery event, India’s Bombayla Devi shot heroically but crashed out in the round of 16. She wins the round of 32 6-4 after five sets, but lost 6-2 in the pre-quarters to Mexico’s Aida Roman.

Badminton: Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa beat Wen Hsing Cheng and Yu Chin Chien of Chinese Taipei 25-23, 16-21, 21-18 to register their 1st win in the group stages. The triumph meant they stay in the contention for qualifying for the quarter-finals.

On the other hand, Saina Nehwal knocked down her Belgium opponent as she took the first game 21-4. She also registered her second win in the group stages in as many games to advance to the Round of 16 taking the second game 21-14.

Tennis: The second Indian duo in Men’s doubles has also won. After Bhupathi-Bopanna, Paes-Vardhan pair has entered the second round.

Indian duo of Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan crushed Dutch team of Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 to reach round 2 of Olympics Men’s doubles event.

Hockey: The Indian hockey team went down 2-3 against the Netherlands in their opening match in group B of the London Olympics at the Riverbank Arena here Monday.

Boxing: Young boxer Sumit Sangwan put up an epic performance against Brazil’s Yamaguchi Falcao Florentino in the 81-kg category before losing his bout 14-15 in what looked to be a controversial decision in favour of the Brazilian.
