2012 London Olympics Day 2: Vijender Singh moves into next round.

Vijender SinghLondon: Boxing: Vijender Singh starts with some winning hopes and moves into the round of 16 after defeating Danabek Suzhanov (14-10) on Saturday.

While Shiva Thapa’s Olympic debut ended in disappointment as he was defeated by his Mexican rival Oscar Valdez Fierro in the bantamweight opening round.

Men’s Archery: It was also a disappointing start to some of the Indian players at the Olympics 2012 as men’s archery team finishing bottom of the heap at 12th in the ranking round held on Friday.

Badminton: On the other hand, India’s campaign in the Olympics fails to sputter to life on day one as the mixed doubles duo of V Diju and Jwala Gutta lost their opening group game in badminton. But India’s P Kashyap beat Belgium’s Yuhan Tan 21-14, 21-12 in the men’s singles of the Badminton event.

Women’s weightlifting:  Soniya Chanu’s 48kg weightlifting event is on. Soniya best lift was 74kgs in the grasp. She missed her last lift at 75kg.

Tennis: Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthy were beaten in the first round of women’s doubles tennis event. They lost to their Chinese Taipei opponents Chuang/Hsieh 1-6, 6-3, 1-6.

Table Tennis: Young Soumyajit Ghosh’s maiden appearance at the Olympics was an outstanding one as he advanced to the second round of the table tennis event while Ankita Das loses on Saturday.

Air pistol: India’s Vijay Kumar is out of the 10m air pistol event and his next fires in the 25m rapid fire on August 2.

Rowing: India’s Swarn Singh Virk finished 4th in the heats of the single sculls event of rowing competition in the London Olympics. He will compete in the repechage tomorrow to keep his hopes of qualifying further alive.
