Guwahati: Holding the State Government and the Centre accountable for the worsening flood situation in Assam, the members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) yesterday staged a demonstration in front of Raj Bhavan.
Hundreds of protesters took part in the demonstration, and shouting slogans against the governments.
The AASU activists were mainly crucial of PM Dr Manmohan Singh, a Rajya Sabha representative from Assam, saying that his role in addressing the serious problem of frequent floods and unabated erosion was equivalent to a negation of his responsibilities as a representative of the people of Assam.
AASU president Sankar Prasad Rai and general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi said that “Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh who is a representative of Assam has been a total failure in addressing floods and erosion. It is apparent that he is more interested in his seat from Assam rather than in the life-and-death problems faced by the people.”
The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) also staged protests in the seven north-eastern States condemning the Centre of failing to address the problems of the region.
