A 5.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Assam and Meghalaya.

Assam earthquakeGuwahati:  A 5.4 magnitude earthquake shaked Assam and Meghalaya on Friday evening, triggering terror among locals. No casualties have been reported.

According to the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong, the earthquake happened at 6.11 pm. The epicentre was at Nagaon in Assam. The tremor was felt in nearly all districts in Assam. Several buildings in Assam’s main city of Guwahati were observed to have developed cracks after the tremor.

East Khasi Hills District Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that there have been no reports of damage caused by the tremor. Modest tremors were also felt in Kolkata, its nearby districts and northern West Bengal.

The seven northeastern states they are Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur are considered by seismologists as the 6th major earthquake-prone belt in the world.
