Over 700 labourers of Assam’s three estates start indefinite strike.

Labourers strike in assamKarimganj: More than 700 labourers of three tea estates in south Assam’s Barak Valley yesterday starts an indefinite strike to demand for payment of bonus and the regularisation of contractual workers, the reports said.

The protesters from Koya, Ramchandi and Moonachoda tea gardens supposed that they have been denied gratuity for the past ten years.

Koya Tea Estate Workers’ Union President, Mr Rajkumar Koiri, said that “Our gratuity has not been paid for long. Besides we have no medical facilities and hundreds of contractual workers in the three estates have not been regularised despite working for years.”

The labourers also pressed for equal wages to contractual employees in line with usual ones.
