Guwahati: Restating its demand for engaging experts in a dialogue over the possibility or otherwise of big dams on the geologically and environmentally brittle Eastern Himalayas, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) said.
There was little in the National Hydro Power Corporation’s (NHPC) declaration that could temper the popular and justified anxiety over the Lower Subansiri project, AASU said.
The AASU said in a statement that “A scientific conclusion on the Lower Subansiri and other proposed big dams on the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra is highly imperative for ensuring safety to the downstream inhabitants of Assam. For this, we urge the State Government to initiate a dialogue amongst experts from the country and abroad, the committee already formed with experts of the State, and other experts of the State.”
The AASU stated that until such scientific negotiations are facilitated, the student body will continue with its agitation programmes with 26 representative bodies of different ethnic communities in the superior interest of the State and its people.
