Imphal: Prior to the Assembly elections in Manipur, the Election Commission on Thursday determined to amend the DGP of Manipur after the Commission reconsidered election preparations in the state. Ratnakar Baral has taken over as the new DGP.
The Commission replaced Y Joykumar Singh with Ratnakar Baral, a 1982-batch IPS officer of Manipur-Tripura cadre with instant effect.
The move arrives as part of a day-long visit to Manipur by the full EC team of Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi and Election Commissioners VS Sampath and HS Brahma to re-examine poll preparations. Sixty Assembly constituencies in the State would go to polls on Jan 28.
In another unique step, the Commission determined to photograph each voter to stop instances of rigging, and bogus voting reported in the past elections.
Quraishi said that “This is the first time in the country that every voter will be photographed at the time of putting the ink-mark.”
In the meantime, EC will start review of poll preparations in UP on Saturday with a team of officers likely to leave the Capital on a two-day visit to the State.
