Guwahati: With most of the rebellious groups of the state laying down arms and entering the peace process, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday asked the Army to augment the recruitment of local youth to channelize energy of the youth towards nation-building.
Gogoi said that “Young people in the state are looking for newer employment avenues that are full of challenges and the Army and other defence forces could easily provide them the right opportunity to contribute towards nation-building.”
He was inducted the first-ever ‘fauji mela’ organised by the Four Corps of the Army at Tezpur.
Gogoi said that “The Army can not only recruit more youth from the state but also take up initiatives that will motivate them to join the defence forces. We cannot afford militancy to raise its ugly heads again.”
Lt Gen Shakti Gurung, GOC of the Four Corps, said that a series of workshops have been structured to motivate educated youth, mainly from backward districts, to join the armed forces.
Last week, almost 1,700 militants laid down arms here in the presence of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram.
