Residents of disputed areas not authorized to vote in two states: EC.

HS BrahmaShillong: Residents of dubious areas between Meghalaya and Assam would not be authorized to vote in two States, Election Commissioner HS Brahma said.

Brahma said that “If such people are found in both the places, they have to exercise their option. They cannot exercise their powers in two places.”

Meghalaya and Assam have more than 12 disputed areas along the border with residents allegedly exercising their franchise in both the States.

Brahma said that “Such action is considered as fraud. Their names will be deleted and will be debarred from voting. Villages can opt to register their names with only one State.”

“We will ensure that collectors from respective districts (of Assam and Meghalaya) see to it that no mistakes are allowed,” he added.
