Power tarrif increases due to Subansiri project delay.

NHPCGuwahati: The National Hydroelectric Corporation Limited (NHPC) warned that power tariff would escalate if the Lower Subansiri project kept getting delayed.

NHPC’s Subansiri basin project executive director AK Chhabra said that the tariff, which was firstly Rs 1.86 paise per unit, had rises to Rs 3.64 paise per unit, going by December 2010 price levels. “The tariff will rise further if there is more delay,” he said.

Although, the protesters are demanding total shutdown of construction activities till all their concern, comprising a complete report on the downstream impact of the dam, are deals with adequately, the expected date of commissioning of the project has been pushed back to August 2014 and the cost has rise to Rs 10,667.09 crore from the preliminary Rs 6,285.33 crore.

Almost 1,000 protesters are blocking the road to the project site at a point near the Ranganadi bridge, the reports said.

One of the KMSS leaders site at Lakhimpur said that “We have set up temporary camps to maintain vigil. There are no feelers for talks from the government.”

However, Chhabra, said that experts had been conferred with regarding the impact of the project and that there was no reason to concern and added, “Despite the road blockade at Lakhimpur, work is going on at the project site.”
