Parliament meets extended session to debate tougher version of Lokpal Bill.

Anna HazareMumbai: Social activist Anna Hazare starts his fast in Mumbai on Tuesday calling the Parliament to pass a tougher version of the anti-corruption Lokpal Bill, and MPs are debating from today.

Leader of opposition Sushma Swaraj set off the debate. According to sources, various opposition parties have moved 56 amendments to the controversial bill that was introduced by the government preceding week.

The key amendments comprise giving the Lokpal an investigative wing, setting the CBI free from the government’s administrative and financial control and making it elective for states to set up Lokayuktas.

The government is convinced of getting the Lok Sabha’s doze off for the bill as it enjoys mainstream in the lower house. But, the worry for the government is in the upper house where it doesn’t have the necessary numbers.

All key parties have directed their MPs through issuance of whips to be present in the house for the debate and voting. Parliament is meeting Dec 27-29 in an extended session to debate the bill.
