New Delhi: Union communications and IT minister Kapil Sibal’s demand from social network sites, like Facebook and Google, to pre-screen user content from India and confiscate disparaging, inflammatory or defamatory content before it goes online.
However, officials from Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Yahoo!, who meets the minister refused to make a commitment beyond saying that they would look into any precise complaint that was brought to their notice.
Their response is learnt to have upset Sibal deeply further so because, sources said, a US embassy official called up an additional secretary in his ministry after the meeting to express displeasure over the Indian position.
At the meeting, Sibal allegedly explained the executives some offensive pictures of Sonia Gandhi on a Facebook page.
According to the sources, Sibal has been taking up the concern with Internet companies for the past three months, but has got no positive response.
According to The New York Times website, Sibal had had a first meeting with top Internet service providers and Facebook concerning six weeks ago and had met the same executives again in late November.
