At least 33 people died in south India Cyclone Thane.

Cyclone ThaneChennai: At least 33 people died when Cyclone Thane strike coastal southern India near the former French colony of Pondicherry, officials said on Saturday.

Thane strike Tamil Nadu on Friday with winds of up to 135 kmph and tidal flow of up to 5 feet. Concerning 6,000 coastal villagers were forced to look for safety in relief shelters, Chief Minister J Jayalalitha said.

At least seven people died in Pondicherry, well-liked with Indian and foreign tourists for its beaches and gardens, a town official said.

Trees were pulled up and roads damaged all along a 40-km stretch of coast that comprises the township of Auroville, known for its avant-garde architecture and yoga community.

The storm swiftly lost strength over land and on Saturday morning and the weather office said that it was now a gloominess that would carry some heavy rain across the south.
