New Delhi: DMK chief M Karunanidhi sought an audience with PM Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Saturday, driven by his 2nd wife Rajathi’s anxiety to certify daughter Kanimozhi’s release before Diwali, DMK sources said.
This is the first such meeting since the allies to J Jayalalithaa’s ADMK in the Tamil Nadu polls in April. A shaken Rajathi is upset that her daughter has spent over 5 months in Tihar. She wants Kanimozhi to come home for Deepavali and join her son Aditya for the festival.
The family is now hoping that Kanimozhi’s bail appeal, which has been made for a 3rd time, will be considered by the special CBI judge on October 24.
On Friday, Karunanidhi met Salman Khurshid as soon as he flew into Delhi, although DMK sources said he could not get much of a pledge from the law minister.
Prior to that, Karunanidhi had sent a notification to the Congress chief through a special messenger, saying Kanimozhi had been in jail for over 120 days and her appeal was getting delayed for one reason or another and that a political motive could not be ruled out.
DMK leaders confess that the situation in Tamil Nadu forces Karunanidhi to continue the Congress at the Centre. However, Kanimozhi’s failure to get bail could upset the DMK-Congress understanding.
