Economic blockade soar the prices of commodities in Manipur.

Economic blockade in ManipurImphal: The economic blockade in Manipur demanding a separate district entered the 84th day on Sunday, while it has led to sky rocketing prices of various commodities, officials said.

The blockade which started on August 1, on two arterial national highways (NH) in northern Manipur, has led to a supreme crisis of essentials commodities. Prices have shot up 3 to 4 times, according to officials.

“The Chief Minister and Governor Gurbachan Jagat have repeatedly urged the agitators to withdraw the blockade,” a government official told reporters.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram in New Delhi preceding week and discussed the blockade standoff with them.

Government spokesman and Minister N. Biren Singh admitted that the blockade has created a severe shortage of vital commodities, including diesel and petrol. People have to wait in long queues in front of petrol pumps, sometimes for an entire day, to buy a few litres of fuel, he said.
