Guwahati: Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh announced that all the rural development expenditure of the Central government would hereafter be audited by Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).
“We need accountability and transparency in the system. When the Centre is spending Rs 1000 crore, people has all the right to demand transparency,” Ramesh told media persons at a press conference.
The minister said that the Centre spends Rs 1,000 crore yearly on rural development, of which Assam’s share is about Rs 350 crore.
“The Centre has also asked the CAG to carry out performance audit of NREGA in 11 States including Assam. In addition, CAG will appoint Special Auditor Generals in different parts of the country,” he informed.
“I insist on setting highest standard when it comes to accountability and transparency,” he pointed out, adding that the department already had 3 rounds of discussion with CAG.
