Rs 1,000 crore assistance by Central Govt for quake-hit Sikkim: PM

Gangtok: Prime Minister Manmohan today made an aerial survey of earthquake affected areas by Sept 18 of Sikkim that killed over 90 people and caused widespread damage to private property.

Prime Minister announced Rs 1,000 crore as central assistance to the State. He also met victims of the earthquake admitted to STNM Hospital. Approximately two hundred people are treated in hospital.

Manmohan Singh, who took an Army helicopter from Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal and surveyed some of the worst-hit region like Chungthang, Dzongu, Lachen in Sikkim. He said,”The Centre will ensure that every support is given to the people of Sikkim to reconstruct and rebuild their lives.”

Manmohan Singh made the announcement during a meeting with Sikkin CM Pawan Kumar Chamling in the Capital, Gangtok.
