Sao Paolo: Miss Angola Leila Lopes on Tuesday was crowned Miss Universe 2011 in a sparkling ceremony in Brazil’s Sao Paolo. India’s hopes were dashed early into the competition’s final rounds after contestant Vasuki Sunkavalli unsuccessful to make it to the top 10.
The 25-year-old Lopes is Angola’s 1st winner. She beat out 88 other competitors to triumph the title during the 60th anniversary of the world’s biggest beauty pageant. She replaces last year’s winner, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico.
“Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn’t change a thing,” Lopes said when asked her interview question. “I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”
China’s Luo Zilin came in 4th, Philippines’ Shamcey Supsup was 3rd, Brazil’s Priscila Machado 2nd and Ukraine’s Olesia Stefanko was picked 1st runners up.
The 26 years old Vasuki from Hyderabad, representing India at the pageant in Brazil this year. She is a lawyer by profession. She was crowned Miss Universe India on July 15, 2011 in Mumbai.
In the top 10 were Australia, Costa Rica, France, Ukraine, Portugal, Panama, Philippines, Angola, China and Brazil.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the pageant that has always picked out the most beautiful of women, matching brains with poise and grace.
