Guwahati: The Jorhat and Barpeta district units of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) staged demonstrations in protest against the police action on the agitating members of the Samiti at Nagaon yesterday.
In the meantime, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has predestined the yesterday police action on the KMSS members at Nagaon.
At Jorhat, KMSS members took out a protest march from Jorhat Stadium to the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC’s) office. They demanded dismissal of Nagaon Deputy Commissioner, further a proper enquiry to set up whether the KMSS members took recourse to any illegal activities at Nagaon yesterday, among others, said our Jorhat correspondent.
KMSS general secretary Akhil Gogoi said that the police forcefully lifted him from the place where he was squatting in front of the Nagaon DC’s office.
He was squatting along with thousands of his comrades, demanding that the Nagaon DC should personally appear of his chamber to get the Samiti memorandums.
The memorandums were addressed to PM, Union Ministers of Tribal Affairs and Power and Chief Minister of the State on the issues concerning land settlement rights to the indigenous people, mega dam and the Indo-Bangla land swap deal.
But the Nagaon DC rejected to come out of his chamber to get the memorandums and asked 5 members of the KMSS to meet him in his office chamber in stead for the purpose. This made the KMSS members indignant and they sustained insisting peacefully on the need of the DC’s presence amongst them to get the memorandums, said Akhil Gogoi.
The police also took recourse to teargas shell bursting and lathi-charge to break up the KMSS members who were sitting calmly, alleged Akhil Gogoi.
