Manchester: Ajinkya Rahane’s half century on first appearance went in vain as the reigning Twenty 20 Champions England continued to dominate India with 6-wicket triumph over the visitors in the one-off Twenty20 international on Wednesday.
Left-hander Morgan was the hero of England’s chase of 166, striking 7 fours and a six. Morgan’s 27-ball 49 that put England on their way after Kevin Pietersen’s 33 in 23 balls put down a solid foundation.
India, still struck in the first over, failed to keep a check on the scoring rate and must be rueing not being capable to bat through their 20 overs and dropping Pietersen when he was on 11.
Prior, an easy half-century by debutant Ajinkya Rahane and burning knocks from Rahul Dravid (31) and Suresh Raina (33) guided India to 165 at old Trafford.
After Indian skipper MS Dhoni elected bat, Parthiv Patel and Rahane got the visitors off to a solid start. The openers added 39 runs on the board for 1st wicket before, Jade Dernbach got Patel (12) caught by Stuart Broad at mid on.
But, the real entertainment came in the 11th over when Dravid slammed 3 successive sixes off Shamit Patel. The duo shared a solid 65-run stand for 2nd wicket before Ravi Bopara got Dravid caught by Eoin Morgan, triggering the Indian collapse. Dravid’s dismissal came when the score 104.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma failed to add as India were soon reduced to 117/5. But Suresh Raina offered some resistance with a 19-ball 33 to guide the team to a reputable total.
