Guwahati: Asam Sahitya Sabha (ASS) has announced suspension of its proposed indefinite fast programme on the state language issue till its Ledo session, which is scheduled to begin from February 1 next year.
In a statement here today ASS said that the conclusion to suspend the fast programme came in the wake of the September 22 assurances of the Chief Minister on the issue in his meeting with Sabha president Rong Bong Terang.
But the Sabha has warned that if the Government fails to accept a firm stand, as has been suggested on the issue of state language and vernaculars before February, it would launch a strong mass protest.
But, the Sabha said in the statement signed by its general secretary Paramananda Rajbongshi that it would prolong with its public awareness programmes like the Jana Jagaran Yatra, on the issue during this period.
It said that steps like making 50- mark questions on the state language compulsory for those appearing in the selection tests for the State Government jobs would oblige the English medium schools to emphasise teaching Assamese.
