Tura: A senior Garo militant belonging to the Liberation of Achik Elite Force (LAEF) group on Monday surrendered to East Garo Hills police with weapons and ammunition after having been on the run for 9 months.
The LAEF militant Artil G Momin aka Pangkkam surrendered to Resubelpara Sub Division police officer B D Marak near Mendipather town and gave a .32 pistol with 6 live rounds, 2 Chinese hand grenades and 2 rocket propelled explosives along with documents of the group.
The local NCP MLA Timothy D Shira was active in convincing the militant to give up his armed struggle and return to the main stream, police reports said.
The militant was a member of the Joking G Momin faction of the LAEF and has runaway from last December’s Gajingpara encounter in Resubelpara town in which Joking and 3 other militant were shot dead although the incident ignited allegation of a ‘staged encounter’.
The LAEF was formed by an ex-police commando Peter Marak, who for well more than 2 years continued to elude security forces and created terror in East and West Khasi Hills.
Marak was nabbed from Jorabat area on the Assam-Meghalaya border, while returning from Nagaland. He was arrested and taken to 1st MLP Battalion in Mawoing for questioning and later moved to Garo Hills on the same day where he died under unsolved situation.
